The Ship

Day 1

Embark in Budapest

Private transfers from Liszt Ferenc Airport meet every arriving family member and bring you to the ship, docked just steps from the Chain Bridge. Check in to your suite, settle in with a champagne welcome, and head up to the sun deck as the ship illuminates and the city goes electric, the Parliament building lit gold against the river is one of the great urban sights in Europe. Dinner on board, slow and unhurried.

Day 2

Budapest, Two Cities, One Day

Morning panoramic tour of Buda, the Fisherman’s Bastion, Matthias Church, Castle Hill, with the option for the older children to take a more active walking version. Afternoon free in Pest: the Great Market Hall, the Dohány Street Synagogue, or a family thermal bath afternoon at the Széchenyi Baths (yes, in swimsuits, and yes, with children, they will be talking about it for years). Evening cocktails on the sun deck as the ship sails out under the lit bridges.

Day 3

Cruising the Wachau & Vienna by Night

A scenic sailing morning through the Hungarian Plains. Afternoon arrival in Vienna; tonight is for music. The cruise line arranges a private classical concert in a historic Vienna palace, Mozart and Strauss, chosen for family-appropriate length and energy. Late return to the ship for a casual late supper if you’d like one.

Day 4

Vienna, Imperial Day

Morning private tour of the Schönbrunn Palace and gardens (skip-the-line entry; a family-focused historian we arrange in advance). Lunch at Café Central or Demel, apple strudel and Sachertorte are part of the lesson plan. Afternoon at the Spanish Riding School (in season) or the Belvedere for Klimt’s The Kiss. Optional teen-friendly add: a private street-art walking tour of Vienna’s MuseumsQuartier. Back to the ship for dinner.

Day 5

The Wachau Valley & Krems

Possibly the most beautiful stretch of the entire Danube, the ship sails slowly through the Wachau wine valley, terraced vineyards and apricot orchards rising on both sides, ruined castles around every bend. Mid-morning stop in Krems for a guided walk through the medieval old town and a tasting at a local Grüner Veltliner winery (juice for the children). Back on board for an afternoon of sailing through the valley with a glass of wine on the balcony.

Day 6

Melk Abbey & a Bike Along the Danube

Morning visit to the dazzling Melk Abbey, yellow and gold and impossibly Baroque, the library will quiet even the wriggliest child. For active families, the ship offers a guided e-bike ride along the Danube path through Wachau vineyards to meet the boat downstream, one of the great cycling segments in Europe. Afternoon sailing toward Linz, with optional cooking demo or wine tasting on board.

Day 7

Passau, Where Three Rivers Meet

Arrival in Passau, the small Bavarian city where the Danube, the Inn, and the Ilz meet. Morning walking tour of the Old Town and the spectacular St. Stephen’s Cathedral, home to one of the largest pipe organs in the world (a noon concert, if your visit lines up, is unforgettable). Afternoon free for cafes and the riverfront, or an optional excursion to Salzburg with a Sound of Music tour for the families that want it. Farewell gala dinner on board tonight.

Day 8

Disembark in Passau

After breakfast, private transfers to Munich Airport (about two hours), or extensions to Salzburg or Prague. We arrange every transfer individually so each family member departs on their own schedule.
