Portugal is the quiet star of Europe right now, and there is no better way to discover it than with a family in tow. This nine-day route winds from the painted tiles and steep hills of Lisbon to a fairytale day in Sintra, a slow week in the vineyards of the Douro, and a final stretch barefoot in Comporta.

Day 1

Lisbon, Tiles, Trams, and a Custard Tart

Arrive at Humberto Delgado and transfer to Four Seasons Hotel Ritz Lisbon. Family rooms on a high floor look out over the Eduardo VII gardens to the river. After settling in, a gentle walking introduction through Chiado and Príncipe Real, an aperitivo at Park (a rooftop on top of a parking garage that sounds wrong and is exactly right), and a first dinner at Cervejaria Ramiro, Lisbon’s beloved seafood institution, where small children are passed prawns directly from the platter.

Day 2

Belém & the Tile Workshop

Morning at the Jerónimos Monastery and the Belém Tower with a guide who tells the discovery-era story as adventure rather than textbook. The original pastéis de Belém next door, warm from the oven. After lunch, a private azulejo (tile) painting workshop in a working studio, every family member takes home their own tile, glazed and shipped to your door six weeks later. Optional: the MAAT for the older kids and architecture lovers.

Day 3

Sintra, Day Trip into a Storybook

A private driver takes you up the coast for the day. Pena Palace in the morning before the tour buses arrive, then lunch at Tivoli Palácio de Seteais, a converted 18th-century palace where the garden terrace is one of the great lunch spots in Portugal. Afternoon at Quinta da Regaleira, with its initiation wells and hidden tunnels that delight children and adults alike. Back to Lisbon by sunset for dinner at Belcanto or a quieter family meal at Taberna Tosca.

Day 4

North to the Douro Valley

Morning train or private transfer to Porto (about three hours). A quick walk along the Ribeira and lunch in the city before continuing east into the Douro. By late afternoon you arrive at Six Senses Douro Valley, a 19th-century manor house set among terraced vineyards above the river, with the kind of family villa rooms that have hammocks on private terraces. Dinner is unhurried; the children sleep deeply.

Day 5

On the River

A private rabelo boat, the traditional flat-bottomed wine boat, collects you from the hotel dock for a morning on the Douro, gliding past terraced vineyards that have looked the same for three hundred years. Stop at Quinta do Bomfim for a tasting (sparkling juice for the kids) and lunch on the terrace. Afternoon back at the hotel for the alchemy bar, where the children can mix their own essential oils while the adults book the Vinotherapy spa.

Day 6

Vineyards on Horseback

A morning ride through the vineyards on horseback, even nervous riders are well-matched, and the trails are gentle. After lunch, a hands-on Portuguese cooking class with the Six Senses chef, focused on piri-piri chicken, bacalhau, and a family-style arroz doce. A quieter night, on the terrace, watching the river turn silver.

Day 7

South to Comporta

A private driver collects you for the long but beautiful drive south (about five hours, with a lunch stop in Évora at Fialho, worth the detour). By late afternoon you arrive at Sublime Comporta, a 42-acre property tucked into umbrella pines and rice paddies on Portugal’s quietest coast. Private cabanas come with plunge pools and bicycles. Dinner at Sem Porta, the on-site restaurant, with vegetables walked over from the garden.

Day 8

Pine, Sand, and Rice Paddies

This is the day you remember the point of vacation. A morning bike ride through the pine forests to Praia do Pego, lunch barefoot at Sal, a beach restaurant where the fish was caught that morning and the rosé is always cold. Afternoon at the hotel pool, an optional family yoga session at sunset, dinner at the property’s second restaurant, Food Circle, where the menu changes daily based on the garden.

Day 9

Farewell from Comporta

A slow morning, one more swim, a private transfer back to Lisbon airport (about 90 minutes) or an extension at Bairro Alto Hotel for one final city night.
